Do You Need Your Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Wisdom teeth usually begin coming in between the ages of 17 and 25. Some people have enough room for them to erupt without causing problems, but many do not. When there is limited space in the jaw, wisdom teeth can become trapped beneath the gums, grow in at an angle, or create issues for the surrounding teeth.

We may recommend removal if you’re experiencing:

  • Pain, swelling, or repeated infections near the back of the mouth
  • Impacted wisdom teeth that cannot fully erupt
  • Cavities or gum disease around partially erupted teeth
  • Pressure that affects the neighboring teeth and causes crowding

The best way to know whether removal is the right choice is with a comprehensive evaluation and digital X-rays. During your consultation, Dr. Erakat will examine the position of your wisdom teeth and explain what he recommends.

Why Wisdom Teeth Are Often Removed

Wisdom teeth do not always cause symptoms right away, but that does not mean they are problem-free. Because they are located so far back in the mouth, they can be difficult to keep clean. This can increase the risk of decay, infection, and gum problems. Impacted teeth can also place pressure on nearby roots and surrounding bone, sometimes causing damage before you notice any discomfort.

In many cases, removing wisdom teeth earlier makes the process easier. During the late teen years and early twenties, the roots are still developing and healing tends to be faster. Addressing wisdom teeth before complications arise is often the simplest and most predictable approach.

What the Procedure Involves

Once you are comfortable and the treatment area is completely numb, Dr. Erakat will carefully remove each wisdom tooth. Teeth that have fully erupted are often straightforward to extract. Impacted teeth may require a careful opening in the gum, and occasionally the tooth is divided into smaller sections so it can be removed more gently.

Most wisdom teeth procedures are completed in less than an hour, depending on the number of teeth being removed and their position.

After the teeth are removed, the sites are cleaned and protected. You will rest briefly in our office before heading home with detailed instructions to help you recover smoothly.

Common Questions About Wisdom Teeth Removal

A few of the questions patients ask us most about this procedure.

Dr. Erakat will provide personalized instructions based on the type of sedation you choose. If you are receiving IV sedation, you will likely need to avoid eating and drinking for several hours before your appointment. Wear comfortable clothing, arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home (the sedation will make you drowsy), and plan to rest for the remainder of the day.

Most patients start feeling significantly better within three to four days. Swelling often peaks around the second day and then gradually improves. Resting, keeping your head elevated, and using ice packs during the first 24 hours can make recovery more comfortable. Light daily activities usually resume within a few days, while strenuous exercise should wait until Dr. Erakat says it is safe.

Soft foods are the best choice during the first several days. Yogurt, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, and lukewarm soups are all good options. Smoothies can also be nourishing, as long as you avoid using a straw. Foods that are crunchy, chewy, or hard should be avoided until the extraction sites have had time to heal. Dr. Erakat will review detailed dietary instructions with you before and after your procedure.
