Pre-Op Instructions
A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth procedure and an easier recovery. The guidance below will help you feel ready, supported, and confident heading into your surgery day.
Scheduling & Appointments
Once your procedure is scheduled, you’ll receive confirmation of the date and time, along with any specific instructions tailored to your treatment. We recommend arriving at our office 15 to 30 minutes before your appointment, so there’s time to settle in, complete any final paperwork, and ask any last questions before getting started.
If you need to change your appointment or have a question about the schedule, please reach out to our team as soon as possible. We’re always glad to help you find a time that works best.
In the Days Leading Up to Surgery
Here are a few simple steps that will make a real difference in how prepared you feel on the day of your procedure:
- Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home, especially if sedation or anesthesia is part of your treatment
- Set up a comfortable recovery space at home with pillows, blankets, and anything you’ll want within easy reach
- Stock your kitchen with soft, easy-to-eat foods like yogurt, smoothies, applesauce, and broths
- Fill any prescribed medications in advance so they’re ready when you need them
A little planning ahead allows you to focus fully on your healing once your procedure is complete.
The Day Before Your Surgery
The 24 hours leading up to your procedure are a time to slow down and prepare your body for surgery. Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours beforehand, as both can interfere with healing and complicate the effects of anesthesia.
Aim for a full night of restful sleep, and confirm your transportation and companion arrangements one last time. A calm evening sets the tone for a smoother morning.
The Day of Your Surgery
On the morning of your procedure, a few thoughtful steps can help everything run more smoothly:
- Follow your fasting instructions carefully if you’ll be receiving sedation
- Take any approved medications with a small sip of water, only as directed
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing and supportive shoes
- Skip the jewelry, contact lenses, nail polish, and makeup
- Brush your teeth and rinse thoroughly
- Arrive a few minutes early to allow time for any final paperwork
If anything comes up the morning of your surgery, or you have a last-minute question, please don’t hesitate to call our office. We’re here to help.

Frequently Asked Questions
A few of the most common questions patients ask before their procedure.
Fasting before sedation is a safety precaution that significantly reduces the risk of complications during your procedure. Dr. Erakat will give you specific instructions about how long to fast based on the type of sedation being used, and following those instructions closely is one of the most important steps you can take.
In most cases, yes, but it depends on the medication and your treatment plan. Some medications should be taken as usual with a small sip of water, while others may need to be paused before surgery. During your consultation, we’ll review every medication and supplement you take so Dr. Erakat can give you clear, personalized guidance well before your procedure date.
It’s completely natural to feel some nerves before a procedure, and we’re here to help you feel as comfortable as possible. Talk with Dr. Erakat about your concerns at your consultation. Sedation options are available for patients who would benefit from additional relaxation, and simply knowing what to expect can ease much of the worry. You’re not alone in this — our team is here to support you every step of the way.
